Leather Gloves as a Keepsake
One day I decided cleaning my apartment and put down the drain all useless
and old stuff. In one shelf I found an old box with my grandmother’s
things. There were different photos, postcards, beads, earrings and only
one glove. It was leather one, but holed. I’m sure that about fifty
years ago somebody needed it greatly. And I wanted to return the box
with all this stuff to my granny. She was glad that I found this box.
And it was interesting to me to know more about this glove and where
the second one. When I asked her she told me a very wonderful story.
This thing played a very important role in her life; it was as a token
of remembrance. When she was young she was fallen in love with a guy.
His name was David. But my granny was under firm hand of her parents,
my great grandparents, and they didn’t allow them to meet, because
David was from the working class – e was a fisherman actually.
One day David left for fishing. Three days passed but he never returned.
In a few days people found his gloves on the bank of the river. They
brought them to my granny because they knew that she loved him very dearly.
She hid them into the box just for memory. She was in love with him.
Nobody knew what had happened to that fellow – he disappeared.
But my granny kept these gloves in the box and sometimes she got it and
recollected her youth. Then she forgot about the box and the gloves as
well.
